Self-Care: The What and Why
So many times when I’m in session I ask, “what do you do to take care of you?” This is not meant to be a trick question, but is often hard to answer.
Self-Care is what you do to take care of your physical and emotional self. It is purposeful, planned, and so important!
Self-care is different for everyone. It is the things that help you feel re-charged, energized and grounded. Some not so fun, but important, self-care is going to the doctors for regular checkups and when you are sick, going to the dentist and getting your blood work and tests done. Making sure you are getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods and getting exercise are also a part of self-care. The more fun stuff is dependent on what feels good to you. It could be going for a walk, talking with a friend, painting, playing music, running, meditation, getting massages or your nails done. What ever it is that helps you unwind and recharge.
Why is Self-Care Important?
So often we are caring for others, our children, parents, friends, students, employees…, but we can’t care for others if we don’t care for ourselves first. By practicing self-care intentionally and consistently, we are taking care of our physical and mental health. We will be happier, more relaxed, better able to handle stress and challenges, more productive and more present.
We all need to be more aware of what we need and more conscious of making that a priority.
In order to hold ourselves accountable and help us all keep self-care at the forefront of our mind, Kate and I are going to share what we are doing for self-care each week. Stay tuned to learn more about what energizes us and keeps us at our best!
